Mariana Baertl is a textiles artist from Peru. She has studied Coolhunting (the study of ‘trends’), Haute Couture, pattern making, and Fashion Business management before realising her passion was in natural fibres. Baertl is inspired by all things natural and organic and what she describes as ‘natural clusters’ which are organic elements tightly arranged such as fossils or dense forest/jungle vegetation. The ocean is also a source of inspiration from the shapes of waves to coral reefs. All the pieces she creates are hand embroidered and handwoven with mostly Peruvian natural fibres and yarn. Her colour palette is mainly warm pastels and muted tones to tie in with the source inspiration. I love the way she leaves the edges of the fabric raw to add some nice texture to the piece, and I also like how she makes clusters and bumps by bunching fabric, which I would like to try and use in my piece.
